Bonnies Defeated in Midweek Doubleheader at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team could not get the bats going Wednesday afternoon, dropping a non-conference doubleheader on the road at rival Canisius.

Canisius (20-15) grabbed game one from the Bonnies, 4-2, and then took game two, 8-1.

Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Sophia Recrosio singled to the pitcher and was able to come all the way around to score after an error on the play.

The Bonnies tied the game in the top of the third after Samantha Moll crossed home on a Canisius error.

In the top of the fourth, Madison Stewart stepped up and belted her second home run of the season, giving the Bonnies a 2-1 lead.

The Griffs were quick to answer and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Sydney Constans scored on a passed ball.

Canisius scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth off a single and a safety squeeze, retaking the lead late in the contest.

Megan Geise entered the circle for the Griffs in the sixth inning, earning the save.

Ally Haskell earned the start for the Bonnies, but only face three batters before exiting due to injury. Elizabeth Lis pitched in relief for the Brown and White, working the final 5.2 innings.

The Griffs carried their momentum from game one into game two, taking a 2-0 lead when Tiarra Johnson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.

Two more Canisius runs came across to score in the second inning following an error.

Canisius added an insurance run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 5-0 lead.

The Bonnies (7-32) pulled a run back in the top of the fifth when Juanita Wolak crossed home on a passed ball.

Canisius put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, playing three runs in the inning to take an 8-1 advantage.

Emily Phalen got the ball in the night cap, tossing 4.2 innings and fanning eight. Tierney Fitzgerald finished out the last 1.1 innings of play, striking out a pair.

The Bonnies are back in action Thursday, April 21 at Niagara for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
