Baseball drops first of the year, 6-5 in 10 innings
March 5, 2003 BRADENTON, Fla. - Valparaiso handed St. Bonaventure its first loss of the young baseball season on Wednesday, prevailing 6-5 in 10 innings at IMG Academy.
Sean Peickert led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a single. Bona junior pitcher Soren Johnson then got two outs, but Jeff Mandsager doubled into the gap to score Peickert with the winning run.
The Bonnies are now 2-1.
It was a disappointing result for the Bonnies, who had battled back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game with two runs in the sixth inning. In that frame, freshman outfielder Matt Agostonelli led off with a walk and moved to third base on a double by junior shortstop Eric Wilson. Agostonelli scored on a ground out by sophomore second baseman Shane Sudbrook. Freshman outfielder Dan Bratys plated Wilson with a single.
Wilson finished 2-4 with two doubles and one RBI while senior outfielder Mike Rapacioli went 2-5 with one RBI. Both clubs had eight hits on the day.
Junior Soren Johnson suffered the loss; he surrendered all five Valparaiso runs over the first 2-2/3 innings on six hits. Valpo scored twice in the first inning and three times in the third. Senior John Brewer turned in a superb performance in relief, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts over six scoreless innings.
The Bonnies continue their Spring Break schedule of games Thursday with a 3 p.m. contest against Holy Cross.
