Bonnies hammer Canisius en route to doubleheader sweep

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - A 7-6 come-from-behind win in the opener and a 13-2 rout of Big 4 rival Canisius gave St. Bonaventure the doubleheader sweep over the Griffs Wednesday afternoon at Mc-Graw-Jennings Field. In the first game, St. Bonaventure tied the game in the home half of the sixth, 6-6, with two outs. Sophomore right fielder/pitcher Brian Pellegrini sailed a solo homerun over to left center, registering his sixth long ball of the season. Earlier in the contest, Canisius went up 5-0 in the top of the second, but the Bonnies began their rally with a double off the bat of senior shortstop Craig King. He scored sophomore designated hitter Joe Rizzo, who reached on a lead-off walk. The Bonnies inched closer with an RBI single from senior catcher Damian Blakeley. After two scoreless innings, the Canisius plated one in the fifth, while the Rizzo's triple to right field scored one of two Bona runs that inning to make it 6-4. The Bonnies opened the sixth with a base on balls for sophomore first baseman Josh Sova and sophomore Michael Proctor pinch ran for Sova. Proctor reached second on a single from senior second baseman Shane Sudbrook and third on a sacrifice from sophomore Matt Agostinelli. Proctor scored on a fielder's choice from freshman right fielder Jake New, while Sudbrook reached third. On the ensuing play, Sudbrook plated the tying run on a balk from pitcher Alex Winiewicz.
Winiewicz took the loss for Canisius and fell to 0-2, while freshman John Nolan earned the with and moved to 1-1. Senior Mike McCormack got his first save of the season.
Pellegrini and Sudbrook led the Bonnies, going 3-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively. In the nightcap, St. Bonaventure jumped all over Canisius' Adam Garrett on the mound. The Bonnies earned eight runs on eight hits through two innings of work. St. Bonaventure had a monster five-run second, highlighted by a Blakeley triple that scored Pellegrini and King. The Bonnies' bats kept going, while starting pitcher Agostinelli held Canisius to six hits and two runs, while striking out eight. Blakeley led the Bonnies in Game Two with a perfect 3-for-3 including a triple and a homer for four RBI. King was 3-for-3 on the day, while freshman center fielder T.J. Pennino went 3-for-4. With the sweep, the Bonnies improved to 16-13, while the Golden Griffs dropped to 5-18. St. Bonaventure hosts an Atlantic 10 weekend series against Fordham, beginning with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday, April 16. The teams finish the three-game series Sunday, April 17, which is also a noon start. |
