April 19, 2005
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Niagara swept a doubleheader from St. Bonaventure on Tuesday at the Bonnies' McGraw-Jennings Field, winning 13-5 and 5-4. The visitors trailed 5-1 after four innings in the opener, but rallied to take the lead with six runs in the top of the fifth. Shortstop Andrew MacDonald had a two-run single and Tim Alberts smacked a two-run triple to highlight the frame. The Purple Eagles then pulled away with four more runs in the sixth inning. Niagara recorded 15 hits against three St. Bonaventure pitchers in the opener. MacDonald went 4-4 with four RBI, while Matt Schaefer finished 3-3. Chris Cerchie, who threw two innings of relief, was the winning pitcher. He improved to 2-0. Junior Matt Agostinelli, who allowed seven runs on 11 hits over five innings of work, took the loss and fell to 4-2. Three of the Bonnies' nine hits in the first game were home runs. Junior left fielder Dan Bratys counted his first home run of the season among his 3-4 performance. Freshman center fielder T.J. Pennino smacked the first homer of his career, and senior second baseman Craig King hit his second home run of the year. Dan Parsons' RBI single with one out in the top of the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie and gave Niagara the win in the nightcap. His hit scored Schaefer from second base. St. Bonaventure had rallied from a 4-2 hole to tie the game with two runs in the sixth inning. Joe Rizzo led off with a triple, but then was thrown out at home trying to score on a wild pitch. Matt Mardeusz, who had walked, reached second on that play and then scored on King's double. Damian Blakeley followed with a single to score King.
Freshman Cody Vincent threw all seven innings for the Bonnies and fell to 4-3. Vincent allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked just one. Josh Sawatzky, who pitched only the sixth inning, was credited with the win and moved to 2-2. Dan Griffin struck out three of the four Bonnies batters he faced in the seventh to earn his first save. Sophomore first baseman Kieran Malone and freshman Jake New each had two hits for St. Bonaventure. MacDonald again paced the Purple Eagles by going 3-3 to finish 7-7 on the day. The Bonnies fell to 17-17 on the year, while Niagara improved to 12-18. The Bonnies will visit the University at Buffalo for a doubleheader tomorrow, April 20, beginning at 2:00. |
