Wilson, Ryan lead Bonnies to 14-6 win over Saint Joe's

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure scored six times in the fourth inning and went on to beat Saint Joseph's 14-6 at on Sunday at McGraw-Jennings Field. It was the final game of the teams' Atlantic 10 Conference series; Saint Joseph's won both games on Saturday. The Bonnies trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth but loaded the bases against Hawks starter Eric Vardijan. After a pop out, senior first baseman Kevin Ryan plated two runs with a ground rule double. Sophomore second baseman Craig King followed with a run-scoring ground out. Following an intentional walk to senior right fielder Mike Rapacioli, junior shortstop Eric Wilson scored Ryan with a double. Junior center fielder Matt Landahl then stroked a two-run double to right to put the Bonnies ahead 9-4. St. Bonaventure added four insurance runs in the sixth. The big hit in that frame was a two-run single by sophomore catcher Damian Blakeley. Bona senior starter Matt Gunesch went 7-1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. He improved to 2-1. Wilson finished 3-5 with four RBI and two runs. Ryan also went 3-5 and had two RBI. Landahl and Blakeley both added two hits as the Bonnies totaled 12 hits. The Hawks committed six errors on the day. St. Bonaventure improved to 19-14-1 overall and 7-7 in the Atlantic 10. Saint Joseph's fell to 15-24 overall and 9-9 in the A-10.
"That certainly was a must-win game for us," said Bonnies coach Larry Sudbrook. "Matt Gunesch gave us a solid performance and we came up with the clutch hits where we needed them."
The Bonnies will return to action this Tuesday with a doubleheader at LeMoyne starting at 2:00. |
