Bonnies down Canisius to bring home Bisons Cup
April 27, 2005
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure baseball team crushed Canisius 12-3 to take the championship of the Big 4 Classic on Wednesday night at Dunn Tire Park. The Bonnies, who defeated University at Buffalo in Tuesday's opener, brought home the Bisons Cup. St. Bonaventure scored six runs on three Canisius errors to pull ahead 11-2 in the fourth. That was enough for the Bonnies to grab the championship. The Golden Griffs tied a season-high nine errors. The Bonnies jumped on the board early in the first with a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore outfielder Brian Pellegrini that scored rookie outfielder Jake New, who walked to lead off the inning. Senior catcher Damian Blakeley then stepped to the plate and laid down a perfect suicide squeeze that plated sophomore first baseman Kieran Malone, who reached on a double to center. Canisius answered with a run in the second, as Wade Rosolowski singled up the middle to score Lee Harber. The Bonnies build on their lead with two more runs in their half of the inning to go ahead 4-1. Sophomore third baseman Matt Mardeusz led off with a walk and reached third on a stolen base and wild pitch. He scored on a looper from senior second baseman Shane Sudbrook. Sudbrook later crossed home on a base knock from New. The Bonnies tacked on one run in the sixth as Pellegrini reached on an error from Canisius shortstop Matt Mazurek. He scored three batters later on a stolen base that resulted in two Canisius errors.
The Golden Griffs put one run on the board in the fourth on a hit from Rosolowski that scored Joe Roach. The Griffs loaded the bases to threaten in the top of the six, but rookie reliever Eddie Williams struck out two to end the inning. Bona southpaw John Zinnicker found his groove in the third, fanning two. The junior allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out five in five innings of work. Zinnicker got the win and improved to 2-4 on the mound. Canisius' Mike Bax took the loss and dropped to 2-4. Five Bona players recorded two hits on the day, while Pellegrini led the Bonnies with three RBI. With the victory, the Bonnies moved to 20-20 on the season, while Canisius fell to 8-25. St. Bonaventure will travel to Massachusetts for a three-game series beginning this Saturday, April 30, with a doubleheader at noon. |
