May 27, 2008

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure baseball senior Randy Moley's long line of academic and athletic achievements received a big boost on Monday, when he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® first team, in voting conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Moley is the third player in program history to earn Academic All-American status, but the first to be named to the first team. The center fielder became eligible for the All-America team on May 8, when he was named to the All-District first team for the third consecutive year.

"Randy's hard work on and off the field truly paid off this season," said head coach Larry Sudbrook. "He was the ideal team captain throughout the season and had a huge hand in all 29 of our wins. Randy is a tremendous baseball player, but an even better person. He has a bright future ahead of him."

A management sciences major with a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), Moley has achieved nearly every academic accolade possible at the collegiate level over his four seasons with the Bonnies. The Lancaster, N.Y. product has claimed consecutive Atlantic 10 Baseball Student-Athlete of the Year awards (2007&08) in conjunction with his All-District selections, and has never missed a semester on either the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll or Dean's List.

It was a banner season for Moley, who has set program single-season records with 84 hits and 61 runs scored in 53 starts. A 2008 A-10 All-Conference first team selection in the outfield, Moley leads the Atlantic 10 with a .406 batting average, highlighted by 26 multi-hit performances. The speedy center fielder is one of four players in the A-10 with at least 30 stolen bases and is just the fifth Bonnie to reach that plateau in a single-season. Moley was a force at any spot in the lineup, reaching base in 52 of 53 games resulting in a league-leading .494 on-base percentage. Moley also led the Bonnies with 20 doubles, six home runs and 56 RBI.

Moley garnered some national recognition earlier in the season when he was featured in "The Faces of the Crowd" in the May 12 issue of Sports Illustrated. Moley etched his name all over the Bona record books over his 179 career games played. A three-year starter in the outfield, Moley is second all-time in runs scored (137), third in both hits (213) and doubles (46), and fifth in batting average (.350) and stolen bases (54).

To be nominated for All-District and All-American status, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
