Nicholson named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week
Sophomore forward averages 27.5 points over two
games
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — After posting
back-to-back 20-point games over a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference
road games, St. Bonaventure sophomore Andrew Nicholson was named
the A-10 Player of the Week on Sunday morning.
The weekly citation is the second of the season for Nicholson, who
was named the Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 29. Nicholson has now
been awarded eight A-10 weekly honors in his young career after
accumulating a program record six Rookie of the Week awards in
2008-09.
Nicholson’s big week came at the offensive end where he
averaged 27.5 points and 7.5 rebounds over a 1-1 week on the road
for the Bonnies. Nicholson opened the week with 26 points, seven
rebounds and five blocks in a 70-69 win at Massachusetts on
Wednesday. The lengthy 6-foot-9 forward then tied a career-high
with 29 points, including 20 in the second half, in a 70-69 loss at
Duquesne last night. His 29 points equaled his output at the
Palumbo Center last season and gave him an average of 25.3 points
in three games against Duquesne. Over the two-game week, Nicholson
shot 21-of-37 from the field, 13-of-16 from the stripe and had
seven blocks.
Nicholson is averaging team-highs of 16.7 points and 7.8 rebounds
to rank as one of two A-10 players in the top 10 in scoring and
rebounding. The second-year forward sports an A-10 leading .612
field goal percentage (123-201) and has reached double figures in a
team-best 14 contests, including five performances of 20 or
more.
The Mississauga, Ontario product has stepped up his play through
five A-10 contests, averaging team-bests of 19 points and 9.4
rebounds per game. Nicholson is one of 10 players with multiple
20-point outings in league play.
For the second time this month, St. Bonaventure will have a week
off from game action until it hosts perennial power Dayton on
Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
