Jayson Gee has impeccable credentials both as a coach and a person.
As St. Bonaventure's associate head coach, Gee has a myriad of responsibilities thoughout the program. He was promoted to associate head coach following one year as an assistant coach.
Prior to coming to St. Bonaventure, Gee was the head coach at the University of Charleston in West Virginia for seven seasons. There, he assembled a remarkable record of 160-55 that included six 20-win seasons and four NCAA Division II Tournament berths.
Gee's 2002-03 club went 21-10 and reached the title game of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
Gee led the Golden Eagles to the second round of the NCAA Div. II Tournament four straight years from 1999-2002. In 1998-99, Charleston earned the first NCAA bid in school history after winning the WVIAC title and finishing 26-6. In 1999-00, Gee was named WVIAC Coach of the Year and was a finalist for Div. II Coach of the Year honors after the Golden Eagles went 28-4 including 18-1 in the WVIAC. Charleston won both the WVIAC regular season and tournament titles in 2000-01 and went 23-7.
Among the many standout players Gee recruited and coached at Charleston were Ajamu Gaines, the 1999-00 NCAA Div. II Player of the Year, and Kalan Smith, a second team All-American in 2001. Both Gaines and Smith were WVIAC Players of the Year.
Gee served as an associate athletics director and special assistant to the president at Charleston.
Gee began his coaching career in 1988-89 as boy's basketball coach at John Adams Junior High in Charleston.
In 1989, Gee moved into the college ranks as an assistant at Youngstown State University. At the time, he was the youngest assistant coach in Division I men's basketball.
He spent four seasons at Youngstown and then moved to Ohio University as associate head coach from 1993-96. During Gee's three seasons at Ohio, the Bobcats won the 1994 Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament crowns and the 1994 preseason National Invitation Tournament. Among the players Gee coached at Ohio was power forward Gary Trent, who was an NBA lottery pick.
A native of Springfield, Ohio, Gee graduated from Charleston in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in social science education. Over his four-year playing career, the Golden Eagles went a combined 92-30 highlighted by a 30-5 record his sophomore season. A two-year team captain, Gee stands third on the school's rebounding list with 844 and third in games played with 122. He is a member of the Charleston Athletic Hall of Fame.
Gee earned a master's degree in sports science and administration from Ohio University in November of 2003.
Gee and his wife, Lynette, have two sons, Brandon (11), Bryan (9).
