Years at St. Bonaventure: Fourth Season

A proven recruiter, assistant coach Dino Presley has over 15 years of experience on the college and high school levels. Presley is entering his fourth season at St. Bonaventure and third under head coach Mark Schmidt.

Presley’s knowledge of the east coast has been profitable for St. Bonaventure recently, as 10 players on the current roster hail from the Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania regions. For his recruiting prowess, Presley was recently recognized by Hoop Scoop as the 73rd-ranked assistant coach in the nation.

St. Bonaventure’s six-member 2008 recruiting class that was ranked in the top 50 by Hoop Scoop and 52nd by Hoopmasters.com columnist Van Coleman helped the Bonnies make a major turnaround last season. St. Bonaventure broke a streak of six losing seasons by finishing with a 15-15 record that was highlighted by a school record seven-game road win streak a trip back to the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Included in that group of players that helped turnaround the program in 2008-09 was guard Chris Matthews. Presley’s connections throughout college basketball helped the Bonnies land Matthews who was a transfer from Washington State. In his first season in the brown and white, Matthews finished with 81 three-pointers – the fourth-best total in single-season history.

Presley served as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County for a season before coming to St. Bonaventure.

He also has been an assistant coach at East Carolina University (2003-05), Towson University (2001-03), Drexel University (1997-01) and Hampton University (1994-95). He spent two seasons as an assistant at Parkway High School in Philadelphia.

Presley’s recruiting efforts have yielded several All-Conference players. While at Towson, Presley landed point guard Mike Green who later transferred to Butler. During his time with the Bulldogs, Green was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and in 2007-08 deemed the league’s Player of the Year and Mid-Major All-American. At East Carolina, Presley helped recruit successful student-athletes such as Tom Hammonds, who made the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2004-05. Also while at Towson, Presley landed CAA All-Conference selection Lawrence Hamm.

While at Drexel, Presley’s success on the recruiting trail translated into wins on the court for the Dragons. Prelsey recruited and coached All-Colonial Athletic Association players Robert Battle, Eric Schneider, Phil Gross and Sean Brooks. In 1998-99, Presley helped Drexel to its sixth 20-win season in seven years.

A native of Philadelphia, Presley graduated from Kutztown (Pa.) University in 1993. He played two seasons at Kutztown under coach Bill Whitney and then began his coaching career as a student assistant under Whitney.
Presley and his wife, Tonya, have a eight-year old daughter, Morgan, and two-year old son, Bryce.
