Jan. 10, 2007
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Another close call that did not go St. Bonaventure's way. David Gonzalvez scored a career-high 24 points to lead Richmond to a 71-66 win over St. Bonaventure in a see-saw battle Wednesday night at the Reilly Center. Both teams saw their Atlantic 10 Conference records even at 1-1. Richmond (5-10) snapped a seven-game losing streak, while St. Bonaventure fell to 4-11 on the season. Gonzalvez's fourth three-pointer of the night came with 1:51 left and gave the Spiders a 65-58 lead. St. Bonaventure roared back, scoring eight of the next 10 points to cut its deficit down to 67-66 on Zarryon Fereti's three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining. On a night where there were eight lead changes and eight ties, it looked as if the momentum had swung back to St. Bonaventure one last time. Following a Michael Lee foul, Oumar Sylla made two free throws with 17 seconds left to put Richmond ahead by three. The Bonnies worked the ball around the perimeter, but could not get off a potential tying shot until there were three seconds left. Tyler Relph's three-pointer went halfway in but spun back out. Brian Morris provided the final margin with a pair of free throws. "When it comes it down to it, you have to make plays, and Richmond made more tonight," St. Bonaventure coach Anthony Solomon said. "We wanted to execute better. There are a few possessions we'd like to have back both offensively and defensively." Richmond went 6-10 from three-point range in the second half and 9-21 (43 percent) for the game. The Spiders made 50 percent from the field overall. St. Bonaventure was only 5-20 from long range including 2-10 in the second half.
The Bonnies led through much of the first half and took a 35-30 lead into intermission despite playing most of the first half without top scorers Michael Lee and Fereti, both of whom picked up two early fouls. Jermaine Calvin made two free throws with two seconds left before halftime to give St. Bonaventure its five point edge. In the second half, Richmond quickly tied the game at 37. The Spiders later went on a 9-0 run to take a 48-41 lead with 11:21 to play. Brian Morris capped the run with a three-pointer. "We just did not start the second half well at all," Solomon said. "We always talk about doing a better job of that." St. Bonaventure responded with an 11-1 run, capped by a reverse dunk by Fereti, to go back on top 52-49 with 8:02 left. "Tonight, we responded well to being down," Solomon said. "I'm proud of that. We came back several times." The Bonnies had four players in double figures led by Fereti with 14. Paul Williams added 11 points and A.J. Hawkins and Lee each scored 10. Hawkins grabbed a career high 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of his career. He also had five assists. Freshman forward Jourdan Morris was effective in 15 minutes of action, totalling eight points and five rebounds. St. Bonaventure's next game is this Saturday, Jan. 13, at George Washington at 2:00.
