Dec. 9, 2006
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - DaShaun Wood hit two free throws with nine seconds left to give Wright State a 59-57 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday night at the Reilly Center. With the game tied at 57, Wood drove to the basket and was fouled by Bona sophomore forward A.J. Hawkins. Wood sank both shots. The Bonnies set up an in-bounds play with 3.7 seconds left, but Hawkins' jumper glanced off the front of the rim. The Bonnies trailed by as many as seven in the first half, but used a 14-4 run over the final 6:40 to take a 27-24 lead into the locker room. Junior guard Zarryon Fereti scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the first half After an 8-2 run gave the Raiders a 32-29 edge, Fereti knocked down his fifth three-pointer of the game to tie the score with 15:43 on the clock. Wright State, however, behind eight points from Todd Brown, used a 21-12 run to take its largest lead of the game at 53-44 with 6:34 remaining. The Bonnies chipped away at the Raiders' nine-point lead and tied the game at 55-55 on senior center Paul Williams' traditional three-point play with 2:34 remaining. Vaughn Duggins put the Raiders up by two less than a minute later, but Williams grabbed the rebound of Fereti's miss and put it back in to tie the game 57-57 with 1:08 on the clock. Wood sank his foul shots 59 seconds later to seal the victory. The smaller Raiders team out-rebounded St. Bonaventure by a 37-26 margin. In addition to Fereti's 19 points, Williams (14) and junior guard Tyler Relph (10) were the only other Bonnies in double figures. Junior forward Louceny Kaba continued his improved play, tallying two blocks, five boards and two points in 13 minutes off the bench. But other Bonnies struggled on the offensive end. Hawkins, who scored a career-best 25 on Wednesday against Ohio, was limited to two points on 1-6 shooting. Michael Lee finished with only two points and two rebounds.
Wood led Wright State with 17 points, while Brown chipped in 13. The loss is the Bonnies' fourth straight, and drops their record to 3-6. The Raiders improved to 3-3 on the season. St. Bonaventure hits the road to take on Albany on Saturday, Dec. 16. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. |
