Bergin, Peck sign National Letters of Intent to join golf team
June 19, 2006
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure golf coach Steve Campbell announced today that Bill Bergin (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) and Nathan Peck (Tecumseh, Ontario/L'Essor Secondary) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend St. Bonaventure University and join the golf team.
"Bill and Nathan should both be able to help our program as we continue to climb in the Mid-Atlantic region and the Atlantic 10 Conference," said Campbell. "Both are accomplished players at this young point of their careers. Since we lost our number one player, Josh Anderson, to graduation last month, there is a definite hole in our lineup. I'm not asking either Bill or Nathan to fill Josh's spot as I expect our returning players to do that ... but I do think that both of them can help us right away."
Bergin qualified for the New York State Public High School Championship each of the last three years. This spring, he placed 42nd with scores of 84 and 76. Last summer, Bergin placed third in a qualifying round held at the Links of Hiawatha to earn a berth in the New York State Amateur Championship. He was a three-time all-Southern Tier Athletic Conference performer for Chenango Valley High School highlighted by a conference title in 2003.
Peck averaged 72.5 last fall for his L'Essor Secondary School team. He also has extensive experience in high-level junior golf. Last summer, Peck was the runner-up in the International Junior Masters at East Aurora Country Club, winning four matches en route to a berth in the finals of the prestigious match play event. He also finished 16th in the 2005 CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior Championship. In 2004, Peck finished second in the Eastern Canadian Championship and tied for ninth place in the Ontario Junior Masters College Preview.
In 2005-06, St. Bonaventure won three tournament titles and was the runner-up in two more events. The Bonnies finished sixth out of 14 teams at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in Orlando, Fla.
