St. Bonaventure men's swimming and diving claim silver at Atlantic 10 Championships
Feb. 25, 2007 Buffalo, N.Y. - The Bonnies edged past Duquesne in the final events of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships to place second. St. Bonaventure completed the final day of the competition with 510 points. The University of Massachusetts was crowned with a first-place finish earning a score of 733. Duquesne followed St. Bonaventure with third place and a score of 486.5. Following are the teams in order of points: La Salle (435); Xavier (348); Fordham University (318); George Washington University (260.50); University of Rhode Island (239) and Saint Louis University (238). In the first event of the night, senior Chris Ekimoff claimed bronze in the 1650-free, touching at 16:00.86. Ekimoff was also tied for fourth among the Atlantic-10 Conference's top-scoring athletes. The Bonnies racked up points in the 200-yard backstroke, placing junior Jim Wood, seniors Ceyhan Guler and Dan Freeland sixth (1:53.27), eighth (1:57.89) and 11th (1:53.06), respectively. Freeland also placed eighth in the finals round of the 100-free touching in 47.89. St. Bonaventure displayed a strong presence in the 200-breast earning both first and third place. Freshman Mariusz Michalik cruised past the competition for the gold, touching in 2:03.83. La Salle claimed silver with 2:07.29, and St. Bonaventure junior Scott Jordan rounded out the top three with a time of 2:07.53. Junior Roman Margulis represented St. Bonaventure in the 200-fly touching at 1:53.91, good for sixth place in the finals round. Senior Matt Dickinson, junior C.J. Maurer and sophomore Jon Larson boosted the Bonnies to a second-place position on the three-meter boards by scoring 421.40, 450.90 and 443.45, respectively.
The Bona men finished fourth in the last event of the championships, the 400-free relay, with a time of 3:07.41. The St. Bonaventure line-up consisted of Ekimoff, Freeland, Margulis and sophomore Pat Henahan. The four-day event hosted 377 athletes representing ten different collegiate institutions. Students and coaches traveled from as far east as Rhode Island and as far west as St. Louis to display their athleticism. The championships boasted a total of 1353 individual events and 93 relays.
