Bonnies golden in win over LaSalle
Nov. 8, 2008 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The men's swimming and diving team pushed its overall dual meet record to 4-1 after trouncing Atlantic 10 rival LaSalle 177-123 in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. The team earned eight individual, one relay and two diving medals to lead the surge. Sophomore Dawid Kundzik scorched the competition for three individual victories on the day, starting with gold in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming in a time of 21.82 in a tight match. Senior Chris Happel came in third for the first of his three total medals on the day, just behind Kundzik with a time of 22.42. Sprinting was Kundzik's specialty for the day, as he took home his second gold in the 100-yard freestyle soon after with a time of 47.75. Senior Pat Henahan finished off the one-two punch for the race, claiming silver in 48.02. Finishing off his day, the Radom, Poland native again beat out teammate Happel, this time in the 100-yard butterfly for another crucial one-two finish. Kundzik and Happel touched in 52.29 and 53.69, respectively. The Brown and White stuffed the medal stand for the day, with the team placing two swimmers in the top three for nine of the individual races. In a tense 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Chris Baker edged out freshman Mike Dansa by the narrowest of margins and went second (1:47.08) and third (1:47.13), respectively. Dansa went on to take third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.35, just behind teammate Kevin Murphy, who topped the medal stand with a time of 4:46.35 in the race. The sophomore Murphy showed he could sprint when he needed to, though, taking silver in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.98. He was followed soon after by junior Mariusz Michalik, who rounded out the top three with a time of 1:00.31.
Michalik himself had a busy day as well, earning gold in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.88) and silver in the 200-yard IM (1:58.98). He touched first again in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.63), beating out Happel, who settled for bronze for his final individual medal on the day with a time of 1:58.46. Koenig was in a league of his own in the 100-yard backstroke, however, winning the event in 54.17. The Fairport, N.Y. native was the only Bonnie to finish in the top three for the event. After racing neck and neck with one another for most of the day, the team came together and excelled in the relays. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the A team of Henahan, Murphy, Baker and sophomore Jared Robinson took gold with a time of 3:12.30, followed in third by the B team of Dansa, Happel and freshmen Clayton Coleman and Francisco Nieves in 3:17.33.
