Bonnies down George Washington, 4-3

MONROEVILLE, Pa. - The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team knocked off eigth-seed George Washington Sautrday, 4-3, at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa. The victory gave the Bonnies an opportunity to play for fifth place in the 2006 Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship. It was the second meeting of the season between the two teams, as the Bonnies defeated the Colonials of April 1, 5-2.

The Bonnies earned the doubles point by winning two of three matches. In singles, the Bonnies split matches 3-3 with the Colonials, giving them the four points they needed to notch a victory.

Junior Andrew Hart got the Bonnies on the board in singles after his 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Eric Elliott Daniels in No. 3 singles. After dropping three of their first four matches, two of Bona's starting three freshman won the last two matches. In No. 5 singles, Victor Lecina snuck by Daniel Balke, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, and Jonathan Luce defeated Will Timmons 6-0, 6-3, in No. 6 singles.

The pairing of junior Alejandro Nery and Luce earned the Bonnies an 8-5 victory in No. 2 doubles, while freshman Leo Mochizuki and Lecina secured the doubles point for the Bonnies, winning 8-3 in No. 3 doubles.

The Bonnies advanced to face Xavier, Sunday at 11 a.m., for fifth place in the tournament. The Bonnies were victorious in their only meeting with Xavier this season, winning 4-3 in Cincinnati on March 17.
