Jesse Fleming begins his fourth year as an assistant coach on the Bonnies' bench.
In Fleming's young coaching career, he has developed into one of the rising creative basketball minds in the profession. His tireless work ethic on and off the court has proved to be a key ingredient in the success of the resurgent Bonnies.
It's no exaggeration to say Fleming is involved in all facets of the program on a day-to-day basis. He holds the responsibilities of recruiting, scouting and film breakdown, video exchange, scheduling, practice and game preparation as well as working with the guards and post players. As the team's director of individual player development, Fleming is in charge of constructing and planning daily skill advancement sessions for the players.
The Guilford, N.Y. native has built an extensive recruiting base stretching throughout the country in the last four years. In the previous two seasons, Fleming has been able to tap the Midwest thanks to the commitment of Tiara Johnson from Kansas City, Mo. as well as the suburbs of Philadelphia as Dana Mitchell joined the Bonnies from Fairless Hills, Pa.
Since his arrival as an assistant, Fleming has helped mold several post players into All-Conference selections. Under his guidance, Mitchell has developed into one of the premier players in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Mitchell followed a breakout rookie campaign with a dominating display on the floor as a sophomore en route to a second team All-Conference selection. The two-time All-Conference choice averaged 18.1 points per game in 2007-08 to become the third Bonnie and fifth sophomore ever to capture the league scoring crown.
Fleming also facilitated the development of current senior Ashley Edwards into an All-Rookie choice in 2005-06. Edwards ranks 12th all-time on the St. Bonaventure rebounding chart heading into the 2007-08 campaign with 512 career caroms.
Fleming's devotion to the program has been on display since his tenure as an undergraduate student at St. Bonaventure. Prior to being named to Jim Crowley's staff in 2005, Fleming served as the head student assistant for the women's program throughout his four-year college career. During this period, he was involved in multiple facets of the basketball operations.
Before his appointment as a Bonnies assistant, Fleming spent the summer of 2005 as an assistant coach at Louisburg College (North Carolina). During his brief stint as a Hurricane, he was in charge of recruiting and on-the-floor coaching during preseason workouts.
In the 2005 season, Fleming also served as an assistant coach at Olean High School under head coach Martha Altmire. During his tenure with the Huskies, he implemented film breakdown and individual workout sessions with all players. Fleming helped navigate Olean to an 11-1 mark and a second-place finish in the Section VI tournament.
Fleming graduated from St. Bonaventure in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in journalism/mass communication with honors.
In past summers, Fleming has honed his coaching skills on the summer camp circuit. He has worked camps at St. Bonaventure, Connecticut, Hartwick, Siena, the Future Stars Camp and SuperCamps Incorporated.
