Jan. 1, 2005
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure rang in the New Year with a convincing 54-37 victory over New Hampshire Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center. Junior guard Stefanie Collins (Montour, N.Y./Odessa-Montour) opened the game and the Bonnies never looked back. St. Bonaventure scored 18 of the first 21 points of the contest to take an 18-3 lead with 9:15 remaining in the opening half. Beginning at 4:42, the Wildcats mounted a 5-0 run to trim the lead down to 10, 23-13, with 3:20 remaining. The Bonnies halted the surge with a three from Collins with just over one minute to play. The Bonnies clicked on both ends of the floor as Collins led Bona with nine first half points, all of the three-point variety, while the Bonnies held New Hampshire to just 18 percent (6-33) from the field. St. Bonaventure took a 28-15 lead into intermission. In second-half action, the Bonnies blew open their largest lead of the game, 48-23, at the 6:23 mark. New Hampshire would come no closer than 16 in the opening minutes of the second half. "Our defense really came together today," said Bona head coach Jim Crowley. "With our two post-players in foul trouble in the first half it was important that we responded defensively." The Bonnies shot 33 percent (18-54) overall from the floor and 21 percent (4-19) from behind the arc. St. Bonaventure held New Hampshire to 22 percent (15-67) shooting from the field, including just 12 percent (3-25) from long range.
Senior forward Tory Vyborny poured in 14 points to lead the Bonnies, while Collins and junior forward Olecia Miller chipped in with 10 each. Miller ripped down nine rebounds as the Bonnies outrebounded the Wildcats 49-47.
New Hampshire's Danielle Clark and Ebony Woods led the Wildcats with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The win improved St. Bonaventure 5-6, while New Hampshire dropped to 4-5. St. Bonaventure opens Atlantic 10 Conference play Tuesday, Jan. 4 when the Bonnies host Rhode Island at 7:00. "It's good to get a two straight wins before the A-10 season starts," Crowley said. "It will build up our confidence going into Tuesday's game." |
