ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure posted its top defensive ever in an Atlantic 10 Conference game and the result was a 49-35 win over Massachusetts on Friday afternoon at the Reilly Center.

The Bonnies held the Minutewomen to 27 percent shooting and forced them into 27 turnovers.

"Coming in we knew they were tough defensively and we wanted to counter that by playing good defense of our own," said St. Bonaventure head coach Jim Crowley.

St. Bonaventure led 20-14 at halftime and scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half, capped by a layin from senior guard Caitlin Crist, to go ahead 30-16 with 17:17 remaining. The Bonnies continued to extend their lead behind a pair of three-pointers from junior guard Stefanie Collins as they outscored the Minutewomen 10-6 over the next 6:42 to take control for good.

St. Bonaventure shot 36 percent (19-52) from the floor. Senior forward Tory Vyborny led the Bonnies with her third double-double of the year, totaling 17 points and 11 rebounds. She also chipped in four assists and two steals. Collins added 11 points to go with three assists and three steals. Collins is now seven points shy of 1,000 for her career.

Tamara Tatham was the only UMass player to reach double figures, with 11 points.

The Bonnies snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in A-10 play. UMass fell to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in conference action.

Massachusetts' 35 points, in addition to being the fewest ever allowed by St. Bonaventure to an Atlantic 10 opponent, was the fewest allowed by the Bonnies since a 76-32 win over Brockport in 1985.

A Reilly Center women's basketball record crowd of 1,741 - boosted by local school children in attendance for "Making Healthy Choices With The Bonnies" - took in the game.

The Bonnies host A-10 conference foe LaSalle this Sunday, Jan. 30, at the Reilly Center. Tip-off is set for noon.
