Bonnies earn overtime win over LaSalle

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure outscored LaSalle 12-7 in overtime to come away with a 82-77 victory Sunday at the Reilly Center. Freshman guard Priscilla Edwards opened the overtime period with a three-pointer at the 4:17 mark to spark an 8-2 Bona run. The Explorers climbed within three on a three-point shot from guard Meghan Wilkinson with 25 seconds remaining, but the Bonnies held them off to take the win. The Bonnies opened the second half with a bucket from Edwards to take their first lead of the game, 35-34, at the 19:23 mark. The Bonnies used a 12-0 run to take a nine-point lead with 6:56 left in regulation, but LaSalle outscored St. Bonaventure 12-6 to close regulation. LaSalle guard Meghan Wilkinson hit a three from the top of the key with 7.5 seconds left that forced the game into overtime. LaSalle jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first half before the Bonnies mounted a 19-4 run to pull within one, 24-23 on a layin from sophomore forward Audrey Latendresse, with 6:11 remaining. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the half, and the Explorers entered halftime with a one-point lead, 34-33. St. Bonaventure shot 46 percent (31-68) from the field and 23 percent (3-13) from three-point range. The Explorers shot 46 percent (32-69), including 53 percent (9-17) from beyond the arc. Junior guard Stefanie Collins became the 13th St. Bonaventure woman basketball player to break the 1,000 point mark with a free-throw with 15:24 remaining in regulation. She finished the game with 16 points, including 13 after the intermission. Collins was one of five Bona players to finish in double figures.
Senior forward Tory Vyborny led the Bonnies with 17 to go with five rebounds and three assists. Edwards chipped in with 13 points and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds, while Latendresse finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Caitlin Crist poured in 10 and dished out a team-high four assists.
"We are starting to believe in one another and our confidence is building," said Bona head coach Jim Crowley. "Today we received contributions from everyone and that gave us the spark we needed to climb out of the early deficit." LaSalle put four players in double figures, led by Wilkinson, with 23 on 8-13 shooting, including seven from behind the arc. The Bonnies out-rebounded LaSalle 42-38. The win improved the Bonnies' record to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in Atlantic 10 play. LaSalle dropped to 8-11 on the season and 2-6 in conference play. The Bonnies travel to Massachusetts on Sunday, Feb. 6, to take on the Minutewomen. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. and the game can be seen on the A-10 TV Network. |
