Bonnies fall to George Washington

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's basketball suffered its fourth straight loss as it fell to George Washington 62-41 Sunday afternoon at the Reilly Center.

For the second straight game, the Bonnies were held to a season-low 16 field goals on 58 attempts (27.6 percent). The brown and white also struggled from long range only making 5-of-20 (20 percent) from beyond the arc.

With the Colonials up 5-2, a three-pointer by senior Stefanie Collins followed by a jumper from freshman Katelyn Murray gave the Bonnies their first lead of the game, 7-6, 4:45 into the half.

The lead changed hands three times before George Washington took control with a nine-point edge, 24-15, with 5:43 remaining. The brown and white quickly cut into the Colonial lead with a 7-0 run that featured a pair of lay-ups from Collins and sophomore Priscilla Edwards and a trifecta from Murray t make the score 24-22.

George Washington finished the half on a 7-0 spurt of its own highlighted by a three at the buzzer by Kimberly Beck that pushed the lead back to nine, 31-22, entering the break.

The Colonials used the momentum from the late first half run to score 24 of the first 35 points in the second stanza to take a commanding 22-point lead, 55-33, with 7:40 remaining.

The Bonnies managed just six field goals in the final period and were outscored 31-19.

Despite taking on a much larger George Washington team, the Bonnies held a 44-39 edge in rebounding.

Collins finished with three trifectas en route to a team-high 11 points. She now has 272 career three-pointers and is just 19 behind Suzie Dailer's school record 291 threes. Freshman Ashley Edwards recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Priscilla Edwards turned in a great floor game dishing out seven assists and grabbing seven boards.

 

 

All-America candidate Jessica Simmonds' 14 points was the tops among a trio of double digits scorers for the Colonials.

With the loss, the Bonnies' record slips to 8-15 overall and 2-10 in the Atlantic 10. George Washington improves to 17-6 and 10-2 in conference play.

Next up for St. Bonaventure is a pair of A-10 road games next weekend at Rhode Island and UMass. The brown and white will tip-off against URI on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.
