Nov. 19, 2006

Final Stats

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The University at Buffalo defeated St. Bonaventure 67-59 to claim the championship of the St. Bona Shootout on Sunday at First Arena.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Belinda Gibb scored 17 points and had five rebounds and four assists to lead the Bulls.

After getting off to a quick lead, Buffalo never trailed in the game. The Bulls made 10 of their first 20 field goal attempts and led by as much as 14 points in the first half.

St. Bonaventure whittled away at the Buffalo lead and eventually trimmed the deficit down to 25-23 on a layup by Priscilla Edwards with 1:27 remaining in the half. But the Bonnies were never able to take the lead.

Buffalo gradually re-established a double-digit lead in the second half. It was a 51-46 game when the Bulls went on a 6-0 run to seize a 57-46 lead with St. Bonaventure, which made only 35 percent of its shots overall (21-59), never came any closer than five points the remainder of the way.

"We have to give Buffalo a lot of credit," said St. Bonaventure coach Jim Crowley. "They made some shots we just didn't see before. We have to make shots, but credit their defense."

Senior forward Audrey Latendresse led St. Bonaventure with 15 points. Sophomore forward Ashley Edwards, who joined Latendresse on the All-Tournament team, scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Katelyn Murray added 14 points. Elmira native Erica Schiefen finished with six points and three rebounds.

Center Barbara Homolova and forward Heather Turner each scored 15 points for Buffalo. Turner joined Gibb on the All-Tournament team.

Buffalo (2-2) shot 47 percent (26-55) from the field and out-rebounded the Bonnies 40-35.
