Bonnies fall to Colgate on first day of Shootout
Nov. 20, 2004 ELMIRA, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure will have to settle for a consolation prize. A cold shooting day was the main reason the Bonnies dropped their opening game of the season to Colgate, 73-70, in Saturday's first game of the inaugural St. Bonaventure Shootout at First Arena. St. Bonaventure will face Canisius, who was a 98-79 loser to St. John's, in Sunday's consolation game at 2:00. The Red Storm will play Colgate for the tournament title at 4:00. Saturday, St. Bonaventure started out strong and led 28-21 at halftime. The Bonnies then opened a 34-24 lead early in the second half. Colgate, however, tied the game at 35-35 with an 11-1 run, capped by a three-pointer by Molly Patterson at the 14:35 mark. The Bonnies retaliated with a run of their own, getting three straight baskets from Tory Vyborny, Stefanie Collins and Maripier Malo to regain the lead at 41-35. Colgate answered with a 9-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by Allison Lipinski, to lead 44-43 with 10:42 to play. The Bonnies led 57-56 with 3:55 remaining when Lipinski, who led all scorers with 18 points, drained a three-pointer and then followed with a layin. Molly Patterson then hit a three-pointer to give the Raiders a 64-57 lead with 2:06 remaining. Colgate's lead was just two points at 68-66 with 33 seconds left but Emily Braseth and Megan Ballard combined for four free throws to extend the lead to 72-66 with 19 seconds left. Freshman guard Priscilla Edwards made two free throws and an acrobatic layup to give the Bonnies a last-second chance, but Collins' desperation three-pointer to force overtime was off the mark. "We came out with a lot of energy but I think our youthfulness showed in the second half," said Bonnies head coach Jim Crowley. "It's a long game and we've got to learn to defend all 40 minutes of the game. It's a game that we can take and build from."
Sophomore Audrey Latendresse led the Bonnies with 16 points, while Vyborny and Collins each had 14. Freshman guard Mandi Pierce scored nine points and Edwards finished with seven. Senior Caitlin Crist grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Lantendresse and Vyborny both collected eight. St. Bonaventure never found a consistent offensive flow during the afternoon and shot only 31 percent (22-70) from the field, including 5-23 from long range. After a cold first half, Colgate, the defending Patriot League champion, found its shooting touch. The Raiders (1-0) made 54 percent of their shots (19-35) in the second half including 7-11 from three-point range. Colgate outrebounded the Bonnies 52-44. Kia Wright led St. John's (1-0) with 33 points. Canisius (0-1) was led by Cheri Wittlieb's 14 points. |
