Collins leads Bonnies past Canisius, 81-64 in Shootout consolation game

ELMIRA, N.Y. --Junior guard Stefanie Collins poured in 25 points to lead St. Bonaventure past Canisius, 81-64, in the consolation game of the St. Bonaventure Shootout on Sunday afternoon at First Arena. The Bonnies took a 40-32 lead into the half and then mounted a 12-6 run in the first 5:54 of the second period to go ahead 54-38. The lead grew as big as 22 points at 66-44 at the 7:58 mark. Canisius went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 66-51 at the 5:45 mark, but Collins responded with a three-pointer from the right baseline to silence the Griffs. After a poor offensive performance in Saturday's loss to Colgate, the Bonnies went 28-68 (41 percent) from the field on Sunday. Canisius shot just 33 percent from the field (24-72) from the field and 6-16 (37 percent) from three-point range. St. Bonaventure won the battle of the boards, 52-50. The Bonnies forced 22 Canisius turnovers. Collins finished the game with a team-high four steals to go with her 25 points. Senior forward Tory Vyborny and sophomore forward Audrey Latendresse both posted double-doubles. Vyborny chipped in with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Latendresse pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds to go with 15 points and a team-high four assists. Latendresse and Collins were both named to the All-Tournament team. "It was a solid team effort," said Bona head coach Jim Crowley. "Everyone came out strong and really responded after last night's loss to Colgate." Abby Radunske and Megan Lyte led the Griffs with 19 and 17 points, respectively. The win evened the Bonnies' record at 1-1, while Canisius dropped to 0-2. In the championship game, St. John's downed Colgate 78-59 behind 23 points and nine rebounds from Angela Clark. The All-Tournament team was led by the Most Valuable Player, guard Kia Wright of St. John's. Wright scored 21 points and added seven assists in today's win over Colgate. She opened the tournament with 33 points against Canisius. The remainder of the All-Tournament team included Angela Clark of St. John's, Emily Braseth of Colgate, Collins and Latendresse of St. Bonaventure, and Cheri Wittlieb of Canisius.
St. Bonaventure returns to action Nov. 27 when it hosts Marist at the Reilly Center. Tip-off is set for noon. |
