Bonnies top Stony Brook behind Collins' 29

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Junior guard Stefanie Collins drained a three-point bucket with 20.4 seconds remaining to give St. Bonaventure a 79-76 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday night at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies held a 76-73 lead heading into the final minute of action, but Stony Brook guard Mykeema Ford's trey knotted the game at 76. Collins' three gave the Bonnies the win as Stony Brook turned the ball over in its final possession. Trailing 41-35 at the half, Collins registered 11 points, including a hat trick of three-point buckets, over the opening 3:17 of the second stanza to ignite a 23-16 Bona run that gave the Bonnies a 61-57 lead. Senior guard Caitlin Crist capped the run with a drive to the bucket as she completed a traditional three-point play at the 10:33 mark. "I was very pleased with our toughness in the second half," said Bona head coach Jim Crowley. "We really responded from a poor first half, and I challenged them at half time. They stepped up to the challenge, and I'm proud of them." In first half action, the Seawolves opened the game on a 6-0 run over the first 3:12 but the Bonnies responded and connected on their next three offensive possessions. St. Bonaventure continued to cut into lead, highlighted by a three-point bucket from Collins at the top of they key with 10:10 remaining. Collins hit two more threes as the teams traded the lead until the Seawolves closed the half riding a 10-2 run to take their largest lead since the opening minutes, 41-35.
Collins finished with a game-high 29 points, including a school record 8-15 from three-point range. Senior forward Tory Vyborny chipped in with 16 points to go with eight rebounds and two assists. Crist, freshman guard Priscilla Edwards and freshman forward Olecia Miller poured in 7 points apiece.
The Bonnies shot 48 percent (31-65) from the field including 10-22 (46 percent) from long range. Stony Brook's Inbar Orion and Jessica Smith lead the Seawolves with 20 points apiece as the Seawolves shot 49 percent (34-69) from the floor and went 6 percent (1-18) from long range. The Bonnies improved to 3-4 while the Seawolves dropped to 2-4. The Bonnies return to action at Kent State on Sunday, Dec. 19 beginning at 1:00. |
