Crowley announces staff changes
June 25, 2009
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure women's basketball head coach Jim Crowley announced a pair of staff changes for the 2009-10 season on Thursday afternoon.
Assistant coach and 2003 graduate Courtney Mattingly has taken the head coaching job at Division III UMass-Boston, while current Director of Basketball Operations Jacey Brooks has been promoted to assistant coach. A search for a Director of Basketball Operations is currently underway.
"We are thrilled for Courtney and the great opportunity she has been given at UMass-Boston," said Crowley, the reigning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. "We will certainly miss her and we would not have achieved our recent success without her, however, she is ready to run her own program and will do an incredible job."
Over her four seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Mattingly's tireless work ethic and diligence on the recruiting trails helped aided in the turnaround of a program that has produced three consecutive winning seasons and 57 wins over that span. The Bainbridge, N.Y. native helped guide the Bonnies tie or set the school record for wins twice during her four seasons, culminating with a 23-11 record in 2008-09.
Mattingly was coached by Crowley during her four seasons as a player at St. Bonaventure from 1999-2003. The 5-foot-9 guard ranks eighth all-time in Bona history in points (1,256), seventh in rebounds (585) and eighth in assists (300). Mattingly is one of only seven players in program history to surpass 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Brooks has served the last two seasons as the team's Director of Operations, handling day-to-day operations, travel arrangements and film exchange. A native of Machias, N.Y., Brooks saw an increased role during the Bonnies' 23-win season in 2008-09, helping with game-by-game statistical breakdowns besides her normal duties.
During the past two summers, Brooks served as an assistant coach on the Western Region team in the women's Open Division at the Empire State Games. In the summer of 2008, she helped guide the Western squad to a silver medal.
Brooks was a four-year letterwinner at Buffalo State College where she finished as the program's fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,219 points. The Franklinville High School graduate served as the team captain all four years at Buffalo State and was a two-time All-SUNYAC honoree.
"We are extremely fortunate to have someone as talented as Jacey ready to move right into a larger role on our staff," Crowley said. "Jacey knows our players, staff, and program and will be a terrific recruiter and on-floor coach."
"I'm really excited for this opportunity that St. Bonaventure and coach Crowley have given me," said Brooks. "I've learned so much over the past two seasons and I'm ready to expand my role as an assistant coach with this rising program."
Fresh off a record-setting season that featured a program record 23 wins, a fourth place finish in the A-10 and a postseason run to the quarterfinal round of the WNIT, Crowley and the Bonnies will return nine players from last year's team. The Brown and White will also usher in a highly-touted three-member freshmen class, while also welcoming back redshirt senior point guard Tiara Johnson, who missed all of last season due to injury.
