A new era of St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse began on September 26, 2008, when Christy Malone was introduced as the program's third coach in its eight-year history.
"We are excited to have Christy joining our Bonaventure family," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Barb Questa, who headed the search. "Her enthusiasm and passion for the sport is tremendous and her experience will be a great addition to our already successful lacrosse program."
"Just from visiting St. Bonaventure I could tell that is was a special place and I'm honored to get the opportunity to join the family," Malone said. "I'm really looking forward to working with the ladies and helping build on to an already strong program."
In her first season at the helm of the Brown and White, Malone guided the Bonnies to four wins in a season marked by heartbreak. The Bonnies suffered five one-goal losses, including three in overtime, while enduring a rigorous nine road games on the season. Three wins in the final five games gave Malone a solid ending to her first season, including a pair over Atlantic 10 foes.
Several student-athletes received individual accolades under Malone guidance in 2008, highlighted by goalie Eboni Preston being named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year - the first in program history. Preston finished as the national leader in saves per game (12.1) and was second nationally in save percentage (.541).
Malone's knowledge doesn't stop at the defensive end, as she also helped the offensive players earn some conference and regional recognition. Among those four was Kimberly Ross who snagged a spot on the A-10 All-Conference first team and IWLCA All-Region second team.
Before coming to St. Bonaventure, Malone spent five seasons at Division II Philadelphia University, including the last four as the head coach.
In her four years as head coach at Philadelphia, Malone posted a 39-21 overall record and helped lead the Rams to ECAC Division II Championship in the spring of 2007. Under the tutelage of Malone, the Rams made three ECAC postseason appearances, highlighted by the 2007 championship.
During her tenure at Philadelphia, Malone coached nine All-Americans or All-Region selections, including three in the 2005 season. Malone's immediate impact at Philadelphia didn't go unnoticed as she was named the coach of the 2004 Division II Senior All-Star Game at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County following her first season.
