Bonnies drop a pair of contests on day two in Florida
Feb. 23, 2008
FORT MYERS, Fla. - In their second day in Florida, the St. Bonaventure softball team failed to reach the win column and suffered back-to-back losses on Saturday afternoon at the Florida Gulf Coast University Softball Complex. The Bonnies opened the day with a 6-2 loss to South Dakota State followed by a 9-2 defeat to the host Florida Gulf Coast in the nightcap. With the pair of setbacks, the Brown and White fall to 1-3 on the season. South Dakota State wasted little time in getting on the board with a pair of runs in their first at bat followed by another tally in the third to take a 3-0 advantage heading into the fourth frame during the day's first contest. The Bonnies finally crossed the plate with a run in consecutive innings to cut their deficit to a single run at 3-2. Following a run from sophomore Stephanie Narde in the fourth to put the Brown and White on the board, senior Brianna Bricker smacked a two-out double in the fifth to put herself into scoring position. On the next at bat, senior Kirstin Strong mimicked Bricker with another double through the left sending her classmate to the plate. South Dakota State tallied three runs in the final inning thanks to a RBI double from Dani Broshar as well as a two RBI triple from Ashley Durazo to extend the Jackrabbit edge to 6-2 and clinch the win. Sophomore Sherri Thompson picked up her first loss of the season to even her mark at 1-1 on the year, while fanning five batters in seven innings of work. In game two action, the Bonnies notched all of their runs in the second inning before allowing an Eagles offensive outburst down the stretch to drop a 9-2 decision in six innings to Florida Gulf Coast University.
Bricker started the Bona surge by reaching first base following an error by the pitcher, while Strong quickly singled to right during the next at bat to put the first two Bona batters on base. Freshman Samantha Rajski advanced the runners to second and third despite being thrown out at first prior to senior Patricia McKeon's fly out to leftfield that brought Bricker to the plate. Junior Kathryn Pazda added an RBI single later in the second to bring home Strong in the Bonnies' final run of the contest. After throwing a scoreless three innings to begin the contest, Bricker struggled down the stretch as the Eagles tallied all nine of their runs in their final three at bats. The senior from Albion, Pa. allowed eight hits and nine earned runs, while striking out three in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Sarah Signore entered the contest in relief for the final two outs. The Brown and White return to action on Sunday, Feb. 24 for two more games in the final day of the first session of the FGCU Spring Break Invitational. The Bonnies begin the day with a 1:00 p.m. tilt against Western Carolina before facing off against Florida Gulf Coast for the second day in a row at 3:00 p.m. |
