Softball picks up second seed in fall tournament
Sept. 15, 2007
AMHERST, N.Y. - On a cold and cloudy afternoon, the St. Bonaventure softball team finished with a 1-2 record on the first day of the Canisius/Nan Harvey Fall Classic at the Pepsi Center in Amherst, N.Y. Niagara finished today's action with a 3-0 mark, while the Bonnies, Canisius and Buffalo all posted identical 1-2 records. Due to head-to-head tiebreakers, the Brown and White earned the second seed in tomorrow's playoff format. "Today was an important experience for our team because it was our first time playing against Division I competition this fall," said head coach Mike Threehouse. "We are looking forward to playing for a Big Four championship tomorrow." The Brown and White opened play this morning with a 3-2 victory over host Canisius in eight innings. Freshman Kara Morenus clinched the win for the Bonnies with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth that drove in the winning run. Fellow rookie classmate Michelle Seeger paced the club's offensive attack from the plate, finishing 3-4 for the contest. After picking up a victory in the club's fall opener against Monroe Community College, sophomore pitcher Sherri Thompson notched her second victory in as many games against the Golden Griffins. Thompson allowed six hits and two earned runs with one strikeout in eight innings of work. In contrast to game one, the Bonnies surrendered a walk-off single in the final inning for a 2-1 loss to Niagara in the club's second game of the day. Sophomore Brianna Bricker struck out four and allowed two earned runs in the Brown and White's first defeat of the fall.
The Bonnies dropped its second straight game after falling to Buffalo 5-3 in its final contest of the opening round. Thompson hurled three strikeouts, but allowed eight hits and four earned runs in her second start in three games. Senior Patricia McKeon finished 2-3 from the plate, while Bricker went 1-3 with a double. St. Bonaventure returns to action at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning to face third-seeded Canisius at the Pepsi Center. Depending on the club's outcome in game one, the Bonnies will play either Niagara or Buffalo in the championship/consolation game at noon. |
