PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The St. Bonaventure women's swimming and diving team lost at La Salle 171-125 Saturday afternoon despite earning three medals in relay events and 17 medals in individual races.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, junior Kara Small swam a 10:43.89 for a second-place finish. Closing on third behind Small was senior Kate Cherry in 10:46.85. Small's silver medal finish was duplicated in the 500-yard freestyle where she touched the wall at 5:11.27, just 1.16 seconds behind junior Allison Smith. Smith captured gold in the 500 with a time of 5:10.11.

The Lady Bonnies stormed the 100-yard butterfly, claiming all three medals. Senior Allison Whalen led the charge by touching the wall in first place with a time of 58.81. Cruising into second was freshman Danielle Butler (59.16) with junior teammate Taylor Merena claiming third (59.23) just .7 seconds behind her.

Butler continued her quest for medals in her performance in the 200-yard butterfly. The freshman claimed gold in the event with a 2:09.45. Nipping at Butler's heals from .7 seconds away was freshman Kayla Cobb, grabbing silver in 2:09.52. Cobb used that momentum as she went on to earn silver in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.49).

In the 200-yard freestyle event, Whalen swam a 1:55.78 and topped the medal stand for a second time in the meet. Freshman Jamie Noonan was a mere .2 seconds behind her senior teammate when she touched the wall at 1:55.80. Noonan earned two more medals in the meet, in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard freestyle. In the 200 IM, Noonan swam a 2:12.21 for another second place finish and grabbed a first-place finish in the 100 free in 53.86.

 

 

Sophomore Katie Valentine stole silver in both of the backstroke events. In the 200-yard backstroke, Valentine swam a 2:07.01, and in the 100-yard backstroke the sophomore raced a 59.71. Freshman Lanae Petty placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.10.

In 400-yard freestyle, Whalen, Ely, Noon and Smith teamed up in the Bonaventure A team to place second with a time of 3:38.79. The Bonaventure B team, made of sophomore Julie Brezinsky, freshman Jacklyn Gerhardt, Keller and Small, took third in 3:44.46 . The 200-yard medley relay proved a challenge, with only the Bonaventure A team taking to the medal stand. Valentine, Cobb, Butler and Petty swam to a second-place finish in 1:50.59.

In diving action, freshman Alycia Gossett competed in the 1-meter dive and scored 154.42 points.

The Brown and White's next competition will be in a month at the Zippy Invitational in Akron, Ohio. Dec. 5. Later in December the team will return to dual-meet competition as it looks to improve its 2-3 record in a meet against Canisius on December 13.
