ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The women's swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play by handling La Salle's swimmers and divers, 174-124, Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center pool.

Senior Meghan King and junior Allison Whalen were the Bonnies' winning duo on Saturday as both swimmers recorded two wins a piece. King lit up the scoreboard with a time of 25.06 in the 50-yard freestyle and later won the 100-yard freestyle by posting a time of 54.15. Whalen won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.22 and finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.18. In the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Taylor Merena finished just behind Whalen with times of 2:10.07 and 1:00.03, respectively.

Senior Taryn Ahern, senior Anneli Johnson and freshman Kathryne Valentine also contributed wins to the women's team. Ahern touched first with a time of 1:57.24 in the 200-yard freestyle, and Valentine tallied a win in the 200-yard backstroke by finishing with a time of 2:10.08.

After grabbing gold in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.31, Johnson suffered her first loss in any breaststroke event this year. In the 200-yard breaststroke, La Salle sophomore Shannon Duval beat out Johnson for the top spot; Johnson finished second with a time of 2:21.45.

The women continued their season-long success in relay events by winning the 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Valentine, Johnson, Whalen and King swam a time of 3:54.89 in the 400-yard medley relay. The last event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, was won by King, Ahern, junior Kaitlyn Heller and sophomore Allison Smith in 3:39.79.

 

 

The Bonnies' sophomore Kara Small also performed well and took silver three times in the day's events. In the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM, Small finished with respective times of 2:11.16, 1:57.59 and 2:13.73.

In diving action, sophomore Gina Hendrickson had a strong showing on the boards. In the one-meter dive, Hendrickson scored 174.75 points, good enough for third. Hendrickson finished second in the three-meter dive when she put up 180.38 points.

With the win against La Salle, the Bona women's season record now stands at 3-2.

The women's swimming and diving team will observe a break in their meet schedule until they welcome Canisius to the Reilly Center on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 11:00 a.m.
